What is the cause of heel spurs?

Overuse is the main cause of heel spurs. Under the foot runs the tendon blade that connects the heel bone to the ball of the forefoot. The tendon blade keeps the arch of the foot tensioned. Standing for hours on the wrong footwear increases the tension. When the pressure becomes too great, for example due to obesity or sagging of the foot, cracks appear at the attachment to the bone. In response, the body deposits a ‘trace’: a piece of bone attached to the heel bone to strengthen the attachment of the tendon. This is the beginning of heel spurs.

Tendon plate inflammation is often mentioned in the same breath as heel spurs. This is the protruding piece of bone on the heel bone. Wrongly, because the pain doesn’t come from there. The real culprit is an irritated or inflamed tendon blade. Heel spurs are therefore the effect and not the cause. Heel spurs are harmless in themselves. Only when the tissue of the tendon blade becomes inflamed do you suffer from a sharp pain under the heel.

Treating heel spurs

Inflammation of the tendon plate can result from old age, diabetes, flat feet or hollow feet. It can also occur with running when you wear shoes that do not absorb shocks sufficiently or provide little support. The heel bone then has a lot to carry. A suitable tool to treat heel spurs are the Herzog Compression Ankle Socks. These offer firm compression on the arch of the foot and around the heel-instep line. Under the foot runs the tendon blade that connects the heel bone to the ball of the forefoot. This extra compression is important to maintain the natural curvature of the sole of the foot and to relieve the tendon plate, so that the arch of the foot will sag less.
